Two things you should read today

Charlie Angus’ latest Substack is a must read for Canadians:

Simon Tisdall writing in the guardian states, “Know your enemy is the first lesson of war – and Britain’s enemy is now Donald Trump.”

This is a lesson that ordinary Canadians have known for well over a year. Trump continues to taunt us and belittle our nation in the same way that Putin ridiculed Ukraine prior to the invasion.

Canadians are like Ukrainians in many ways. When pushed to the wall, we have spines of steel. When forced to choose between Vimy or Vichy, I know where ordinary Canadians will be. There is no return to normal.

Canada’s future is tied with Ukraine. If Putin is allowed to win, Trump may be willing to try his luck bombing our cities and trying to terrify our civilians.

The second one from Viktor Kravchuk:

I write often about courage here.
About resilience, about hope.
About strength.
But today is International Women’s Day.
And this is the day to remember that many of the greatest lessons about courage do not come from war, from politics, or from history books.
They come from women.
Because for many women, courage is not a heroic act.
It is everyday life.
The courage to prove your value again and again in a world where men have long been used to holding power.
The courage to speak in places where your voice is questioned, and to carry responsibilities that often remain invisible.
In a world that has often tried to crush your voice and your possibilities.
A courage that rarely receives applause.
And here you are.
Still carrying life forward.

I feel it, for sure. I’ve felt it from the moment trump made open threats against our sovereignty.

I’m 83. That doesn’t mean I have to sit back and watch what’s unfolding. I’m trying to do my part – make sure other Canadians understand what’s going on and what we will have to do about it.

Look no further than Ukraine.

If you aren’t reading Viktor Kravchuk you should be.

We must be prepared. Each one of us will have a role in sustaining Canada.

trump IS THE ENEMY!

  2. Thank you very much for your post. It’s timely, and very important. I’m visiting because of Bernie’s reblog. Since Trump’s re-election I’ve been increasingly worried about an invasion. I’m former combat military and from time to time have spent sleepless nights thinking about partisan fighting and how I could contribute, even at my age.
I’m glad we have Carney leading us but there are times when I become concerned about the pretzeling he does in order not to offend Trump in order to try to keep CUSMA alive. I think CUSMA is likely dead: the first step to total control is to cripple us economically. After that are the bombs. I’ll reblog your post as well.

    • Lynette, thanks for commenting. I’ve been saying for ages that there is no CUSMA deal – doesn’t matter what agreement the negotiators reach, trump will override it with some goofy argument that makes sense only to him. Carney’s “pretzeling” as you called it also drives ME crazy – like you, I understand why he does it, but I think he needs to come clean about what’s going on in his head. Whatever our age, I believe we all will have a role to play in the coming months/years as we fight to save our sovereignty!

  3. I have reblogged your post with the links. Thanks for always sourcing out and sharing stuff. We must keep people awake and aware of what is transpiring.

    • My sharing/writing is the best I can manage in the way of resistance. I’m no good at a rally (except on a mild day when I can bring my chair to sit quietly). I’m still strong at keeping up and making sense of what seems to be happening. That’s my small contribution. Thanks, Bernie, for passing it along. The more people who understand what’s happening the better. Together we’ll keep shouting!

      • This is a perfect format for shouting. I’ve been trying to cut down my political consumption but there are times that I just must speak up. And your post was well written so thanks for letting me “shout it” as well.

      • Don’t I wish I could read less. I’m getting good at scanning fast, though. And podcasts – not on your life. Except for Tim Snyder, occasionally, I have no time to watch streaming conversations. “Shouting” seems to be my way of protesting.

      • I was listening to a number of Canadian political podcasts. I had to stop as I was running my brain into the ground with all the doom and gloom. I want to be informed but not inundated. Bernie

      • Yup. I sure get that.
I guess what keeps me hanging in is knowing there are independent journalists that let the world know all the bad stuff that’s happening. trump’s censorship efforts will fail in the end, even this supreme court will have to uphold the first amendment but in the meantime, I feel I need to keep in touch with what’s actually happening even if it’s dreadful news! [I subscribe to The Globe and Mail, and The Guardian which are removed from trump’s censorship efforts as well as several independent journalists.]
