Spring?

Here we are two days away from spring and the snow on my back deck now reaches a quarter of the way up my living room window; the drift is nearly to the top of the fence and no end in sight. I’d open my back door and use the snow as a refrigerator except I’d not be able to close the door again!

The snow is still coming down heavily, blowing and swirling and the drifting is increasing in depth. I haven’t looked out my front door – I could see my car nearly buried from one of my upstairs windows.

Ok, this is my view from the front door!

It’s going to take days to dig out! And we’re expecting more snow on the weekend.

Can you imagine being down south and arriving home to this – not even being able to get in the house.

It’s a great day for sewing!

Another Winter Snow Fall

It snowed again last night – a light, dry snow which drifted onto my back deck. When I tried to open my back door this morning to see how much drifting had occurred I could open it just about 2″ – that was it. The drift came about a third of the way up the door!

You can see my shed is being buried – I love the “hat” on the roof; I just hope the roof will bear all that added weight.

The drifts would be over my waist were I to try to come from around the side of the house. I decided I couldn’t get to my back door to shovel it myself.

My neighbour Verne did it for me around noon. So now I can open the door. However, I’d have to be determined to “plough” my way through the drift if heaven forbid I had to get out.

-8 But a Glorious Day!

IMG_4250
It’s a minus 8 outside but the day is simply gorgeous.
I sit here enjoying the view from my living room window, my Amaryllis in full bloom, the drifted snow on my back deck, and I feel happy.
My neighbours have been complaining about the weather, but I learned many years ago while living in Winnipeg to dress warmly and head out to enjoy the sunshine. Just what I’m going to next.

Anthurium

IMG_4101

Saw this Anthurium in the grocery store last week, beside the Phalaenopsis display. Decided it had my name on it. I particularly liked the green on the flowers. I’ve visited Anthurium growers in Hawaii where you see huge greenhouses filled with plants in bloom – the expanse of read flowers is quite lovely. Thought this one would look good among my other indoor plants.

Two days ago I also picked up a Cyclamen.

Again, the flowers of this plant are a bit unusual with the white edges to the deep pink colour. No scent, thankfully. Sometimes Cyclamen will have a rather strong perfume, but this one doesn’t. Lots of small buds still to develop on this plant so it will be showy for a number of weeks. Look forward to enjoying it.

This new plant acquiring is to offset the bleak look of my back deck: the birdbath covered to protect it from the snow, the umbrella stored in the shed, the perennial plants with their leaves gone and the annuals withered and drooping.

My Blooming Hibiscus

hibiscus

My hibiscus was slow to start blooming — I got a couple of flowers when I bought it earlier in the summer but then nothing for about a month. When the plant got moved back to the newly finished deck it decided it liked its new home, I guess, and started blooming – a couple of flowers a day. Most of them have had a yellow edge to the petals with predominantly red centers  – this one turned out to be predominantly golden yellow. I think I’ve caught it at its peak. The flower didn’t survive the storm we had yesterday – good thing I to the picture when I did.

Beautiful Blooms on my New Deck

IMG_3132This is my hibiscus with a flower in full bloom yesterday. I just love the brilliant yellow shading into red. There are three more flowers about to open – not today, but in the next day or two.

IMG_3126I had to visit a nearby garden centre to pick up some potting soil. I saw this canna lily and couldn’t leave without it. The colours complement the hibiscus and make a very cheerful focus among the greenery on my deck.

My New Back Deck

This is now the view from my living room window. The back fence is gone, and half of my container garden has been discarded. There’s still a bit of finishing work to do – it’ll get done tomorrow.  The finished deck is a 20′ wide x 16′ deep construction, raised above the ground an average of 8″.  Now there will be space to have friends over for tea!
